Dave Dean, 35, is a regular. He said: ‘I started using the pub about 12 months ago when I heard it was under new ownership. ‘I live quite close by but had never been there before – now I wouldn’t go anywhere else. It has everything I need. ‘The view from the garden is awesome, especially at night when you can see little lights twinkling at the end of the Slipper Pond. ‘I had family down at the weekend and I recommended we go there for a roast and they absolutely loved it.’ In the summer, the pub garden, is crowded with people of all ages, including walkers and cyclists stopping off for a pint, enjoying the sunshine and the good company. And in the winter there’s fierce competition for the prime spots in front of the two inglenook fireplaces with roaring fires. Every Sunday there is live music with a festival atmosphere with music to suit all tastes. On Thursday, single men and women meet for the hugely successful Club After Eight where they get the chance to enjoy the food, drink and the company of new friends. And twice a week members from the New Life Church, based in Emsworth, hold their meetings at the pub. Sally, 32, said: ‘I absolutely love it here. Just as we decided to take it over we found out I was pregnant and I said to Pete “Can we really do this?”. ‘We just went for it. The customers absolutely adore our daughter Layla-Rose – she had 103 cards for her first birthday! ‘She is a mini celebrity around here and people come in just to see her. ‘We’re dog friendly too which people love. ‘We have lots of new clientele who love the garden and we have a hard core of regulars who keep us going through the winter. It is a warm, traditional pub and that’s why people love it so much.’ The News 26-05-11 |
